Re:
Application for Mathematics Teacher — Middle & Senior School (Years 7 to A-Levels)
Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to express my keen interest in the Mathematics Teacher position at Nairobi International School, as advertised. With over 15 years of teaching experience in international schools — spanning the Cambridge IGCSE and British National Curriculum as well as the International Baccalaureate — and a consistent record of outstanding student outcomes, I am confident I would be an enthusiastic and committed addition to your hardworking school community.
I am currently teaching IB Diploma Applications & Interpretation Mathematics (SL and HL) and IB MYP Mathematics at Westwood International School in Gaborone, Botswana, where I also serve as Personal Project Coordinator. In my two years in this coordination role, I have maintained a 100% pass rate across the cohort — with all students scoring above 4 and one student achieving the maximum score of 7. Earlier in my career at Rainbow High School, I taught Cambridge IGCSE Physics and Mathematics to Years 7–13, achieving a 100% IGCSE Physics pass rate with 75% of students earning Grade A. This breadth of curriculum experience means I am fully prepared to teach confidently within the British National Curriculum, from IGCSE through to A-Level.
I am a highly IT-savvy educator who uses technology not just as a classroom tool but as a vehicle for innovation. I independently designed, built, and maintain ibtopmark.com — a fully functional e-learning platform that provides IB students with targeted e-assessment practice questions and past-paper resources, used daily by my students. I am equally fluent in using Artificial Intelligence to develop high-quality curricular materials and teaching resources, and I actively integrate AI tools into my planning and lesson design. I am proficient in ManageBac, Google Workspace for Education, Khan Academy, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Beyond results, I am passionate about building a wider culture of mathematical curiosity. I established and coordinate a Mathematics Olympiad programme — including the Kangaroo Maths Contest and the University of Witwatersrand Olympiad — and have coached the school Chess Club, with students competing at international level in Qatar, China, and Japan. I believe enrichment and extracurricular engagement are integral to developing the well-rounded, resilient learners that international schools like NIS strive to produce.
Nairobi International School's commitment to personal growth, integrity, self-discipline, rethinking, and caring for each other resonates deeply with my own philosophy as an educator. I thrive in academically motivated environments where excellence is the standard and every student is valued as an individual. The opportunity to bring my skills, energy, and experience back to Kenya — where my own teaching journey began — makes this application especially meaningful to me.
I have enclosed my updated CV along with supporting documents, including recommendation letters from school leadership at Westwood International School. I would be delighted to discuss my application further at your convenience, and I am available for interview at any time before the 15 May 2026 deadline.
Thank you sincerely for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the Nairobi International School family.
Yours sincerely,
Joseph Muiruri Gitau
